Hearing
was held in the Supreme Court regarding the permission for Kanwar Yatra in
Uttar Pradesh. After the hearing, the Supreme Court asked the UP government to
either reconsider organizing the symbolic ‘Kanwar Yatra’ or we will pass the
order. The top court has directed the UP government to respond by Monday.
A
bench of Justice Rohington F Nariman said that as the pandemic affects all
citizens of the country, physical travel cannot be allowed. Prima facie we are
of the view that this is a matter relating to every citizen and all other
sentiments including religious are subject to the right to life of the
citizens. The Supreme Court has given the UP government time till Monday to
present its views.
At
the same time, during the hearing, the UP government said that it has planned
to allow the Kanwar Yatra in a symbolic way and in limited numbers. The UP
government has also said that it has decided to provide Gangajal to the
devotees through containers. However, the Supreme Court did not agree with
this.
Meanwhile,
the Central Government has also filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court on
Friday. In this affidavit, the government has told the apex court that in view
of the corona epidemic, the state governments should not allow the movement of
kanwariyas to bring ‘Ganga water’ from Haridwar. However, keeping the religious
sentiments in mind, the State Governments should develop a system to provide ‘Ganga
Jal’ through tankers at designated places.
It
is worth noting that in view of the Corona crisis, this time the Uttarakhand
government has banned the Kanwar Yatra. However, the Uttar Pradesh government
did not stop this, after which the Supreme Court itself took cognizance of the
matter.
