Persons
in cyberspace are called netizens i.e. anyone who is associated with computers,
information technology and the Internet. Thus, a netizen is a person who
becomes part of and participates in the larger internet society, which
recognizes few boundaries save language.
The term ‘netizen’ comes from the
combination of 2 words ‘Internet’ and ‘citizen’.5 The number of netizens had
jumped to 700 million in 2001 from a mere 143 million in 1998 and by the year
2005 approximately 1 billion netizens were connected to internet and this
number is increasing at a very fast speed every year. Further there are over 30
million websites online.
