After
a long confrontation with the central government, social media platform Twitter
has finally decided to implement new IT rules. This information has been given
by Twitter to the Delhi High Court on 31st May 2021. Twitter told
the High Court that it has implemented the IT Rules, 2021 and has also
appointed a local officer in India from May 28, who will deal with local
complaints.
In
the High Court, where Twitter said that we have obeyed the laws of the Center,
the government said that it did not happen. A petition was filed last week in
the Delhi High Court against the social media network Twitter for not following
the new information technology rules issued by the central government. In the
petition, there was a demand to order Twitter to follow the rules issued by the
government with immediate effect.
Twitter has not done any work towards
enforcing the rules
Advocate
Amit Acharya had said in the petition that the Central Government, while
issuing new information technology rules on February 25 this year, had directed
all social media networks, including Twitter, to implement it within 3 months.
Twitter is yet to appoint a local grievance officer to handle complaints about
tweets on its platform, even after the May 25 deadline.
The
Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Code of
Conduct) Rules, 2021 was notified by the Central Government on February 25,
2021. Under this, social media networks will have to find out who sent a
message first. Along with this, they have been asked to appoint a local
complaints officer for redressal of complaints about any post, message.
