Justice Arun Kumar Mishra (Retd) took over as the Chairman of the National
Human Rights Commission (NHRC or NHRC) today. His name was approved by a
committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The post of NHRC
chairman was vacant for the last six months.
Former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Mahesh Kumar Mittal and former Director of IB Dr Rajeev Jain have been made members of NHRC.
The high-level committee headed by the PM included Home Minister Amit Shah, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Rajya Sabha Deputy Speaker Harivansh.
Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, a resident of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, studied law after taking an MA degree in science. Lawyer is already in his family. His father Hargovind Mishra was a judge of the Jabalpur High Court, while many relatives in his family are well-known lawyers. His daughter is also a lawyer of Delhi High Court. Despite practicing law for almost 21 years, he also did law teaching and was associated with Jiwaji University, Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh.
- Justice Arun Mishra was first appointed as an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in the year 1999.
- Then when his appointment was permanent, in the year 2010, he was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court.
- In 2012, he became the Chief Justice of the Kolkata High Court.
- Pending his appointment to the Supreme Court, he was made a judge of the Supreme Court in 2014.
- A division bench of the Supreme Court has convicted eminent lawyer Prashant Bhushan in a contempt of court case and imposed a fine of one rupee on him. The three-member bench was headed by Justice Arun Kumar Mishra while also comprising Justices BR Gavai and Krishna Murari.
- Justice Arun Mishra retired from the Supreme Court on 2 September 2020.
