Whether Soya Milk can be called ‘Milk’, there was a
debate in the Delhi High Court on 26 May 2021. Actually, a petition was placed
in the court, in which it was argued that products made from soy milk and
almonds cannot be called ‘Milk’. On this issue of the petitioner, the Delhi
High Court has asked the Central Government and the Delhi Government to express
their views.
Shakespeare has said what is there in the name. In
fact, a case has come before the Delhi High Court, that whatever products have
come from non-mammal sources, such as plants, etc. Can it be called milk or
milk products? On this issue, the High Court has sought answers from the
Center, Delhi Government and Food Safety Regulator FSSAI.
On the petition of the National Cooperative Dairy
Federation of India (NCDFI), Justice Rekha Palli has summoned the companies,
including the Center, Delhi Government and the Food Safety and Standards
Authority of India (FSSAI), on the matter. It also includes companies like
Hershey, which sells products under the name soy milk.
Apart from Hershey, the High Court has also sent
notices to several other companies to find their side. NCDFI is the apex body
of the co-operative dairy sector, which has objected that products made from
soy and almonds cannot be called ‘milk’ or ‘milk products’, as is paneer, curd
are only produce made from milk. The
High Court said that the matter is very interesting (interesting), so the case
will be heard on September 14, 2021.
